Beat Bama Food Drive

Since 1994, Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama have united students, faculty, alumni, and community members to help fight hunger and poverty in East Alabama by challenging the University of Alabama and the West Alabama Food Bank to see who can collect more non-perishable food to help those in need. This good-natured competition has made an impact that reaches far beyond the campuses where it began. Since its inception in 1994, the competition has raised over 10 million pounds of food for Alabamians without proper access to food. Help us win the food fight trophy in East Alabama as we look to beat hunger and BEAT BAMA!

How can I get involved with BBFD?

Visit our AUinvolve page for a list of events, open signups, and ways to join the fight against food insecurity!

How do you total the donations at the end of the drive?

All physical donations are weighed upon arrival at the food bank. For monetary donations, we calculate every $1 raised as 2 pounds of food. The total weight of physical and monetary donations are added together for the total poundage each year.

Why the competition with the University of Alabama?

Nothing compares to the football rivalry that exists in the State of Alabama! This is about much more than the 60 minutes played on the football field once a year. This competition was the brainchild of Craig Young, former director of the West Alabama Food Bank, who felt that as long as there is this intense competition, we might as well put it to good use. The real winners of this annual competition are the hungry families fed through the food bank network. This food is channeled into the senior programs, low-income daycares, emergency food pantries, missions, and rehabilitation centers that are served by the Food Bank of East Alabama and the West Alabama Food Bank.
